Favorite SGGL Song: Brown-eyed Girl
Favorite SGGL Album: ALL -- especially the first

Poll response: Prefer live recordings

Became a fan:I heard SGG the first night they performed at Pavilion XI's Open Mike night and have loved their harmonies ever since. Mike Goggin and Rusty Speidel were both on the staff of The Declaration where I was a writer and editor when I was at UVa 79-83. The performances they gave, including their Concert on The Lawn graduation week in 1983, will always be among my best memories of Charlottesville.

Poll response: Prefer live recordings

Became a fan:I was introduced in the early 80's by Liz Ball. She summered with me in Maine and brought a tape. (They were just SGG then and I made fun of their names because they didn't make sense - they are a mouthful!) Girl in Red was a favorite. When I moved to Northern VA I discovered the Birchmere and saw they played there frequently! When Liz was in town last January, my sister Sarah and I went and it was pretty nostalgic for us and our summers in Maine. Now I'm psyched that I'm able to see them live on a regular basis and I've even introduced several friends.

Favorite SGGL Album: hard to say I love them all!!!

Poll response: Prefer live recordings

Became a fan:I attended Mary Baldwin in Staunton,VA from 1983-85. During that time I became exposed to SGGL through sunday parties at baldwin, road trips to Charlottesville and getting my hands on their first album. I was lucky enough to be in Arlington last year from Denver and catch a show at the Birchmere, my love for them was rekindled. They are truly some of my favorite artists, listening to their music calms my soul!!

Became a fan:'85-'86 - Me and the Bierly Brothers used to stand on the chairs around last call at the UVA Union and dunkenly chant great cover songs with SG&G. We were also ardent devotees of 'The Deal'!!! It was a time...

Comments:Last saw them (minus "L") at Herndon Town Festival 5/31/96. As your page indicates above, the drummer was NOT exactly a plus to the performance. However, I will ALWAYS be a fan...

Favorite SGGL Album: Just for You

Poll response: Prefer live recordings

Became a fan:First year at UVa, going to see SGG at Pav XI was my motivation for finishing my calculus homework! I think of SGG/SGL as the soundtrack to my UVa years...I was a serious groupie for a few years, following them to the Mineshaft, and even to NYC's Lone Star Cafe...One highlight is that Rusty sang me a song for my 20th birthday (back in 1984...). Their music is simply wonderful.

Not to mention that they once put the song on repeat in their cd player for over and hour. Their music has produced many wonderful memories for the 3 of us. I cant hear a single song without thinking of Pete, Art and my college days. Looking forward to many more memories of live performances.....

THERE WERE EVEN A GROUP OF US WHO FOLLOWED THEM MUCH LIKE GRATEFUL DEAD FANS WOULD BACK IN 1987 DURING THEIR SUPPOSED "FARWELL TOUR". WE LIKED TO REFER TO OURSELVES DURING THOSE CAREFREE DAYS AS SNEAKERHEADS. WE WERE VERY PLEASED WITH THEIR RESURRECTION IN 1989. I NOW LIVE IN RICHMOND AND AM MARRIED WITH 2 DAUGHTERS AND DON'T ROAD TRIP AS FREQUENTLY, BUT STILL SEE THEM WHENEVER THEY ARE HERE OR IN C'VILLE.

Favorite SGGL Song: One Heart
Favorite SGGL Album: Half a world away

Poll response: Prefer live recordings

Became a fan:I was at a Kathy Mattea concert in Henderson NC when I first heard Michael Lille. It was not long after I found myself driving from Milwaukee Wisconsin to Richmond to hear Michael again. It was in Richmond, that I first heard them all (SGGL) and I was more than impressed. The music, the true talent, the performance. They were all beyond my expectations. The music world just does not know what they are missing, if they have not heard them play.I will gladly make the trip again, for this group is well worth it. I have talked a lot about them since.

Comments:I can see why they have the following they do, no matter where they play. These guys are great! I hope they keep the music coming for years to come. I know one day soon, they will get their big break in the business, as they so well deserve. I may be 1200 miles away, but they music is not. Thanks for the great entertainment!

Saw them June '96 at the Birchmere, and it was one of the best performances of theirs I'd seen. Michael Goggin sounded better than he ever has. It was great. I'm jealous of those 'hoos who got to spend three or four years with these guys at UVa. Wish I'd been there! Just bought Michael Lille's solo album "Middle Child." Love it.

She asked if I could get my hands on any of the band's music because it reminded her of the times we'd had sharing our love of the music. I promised to research the web & here I am. In early 88 they started playing a few shows with one of them being at LC. I had helped arrange them to play and got to know SGGL&L personally. I took some great black and white photos during the sound check and show which I still look back on from time to time. I have all the albums and the Farewell Video from my college days. A friend recently told me about the web page and here I am. Unfortunately I live in CT and don't get to see them play anymore. I'd love to get them to come to NY or CT. I always liked theur music, but I especially liked that they cared enough to give their time to a good cause. When I hear their music now at the Bierchmere etc. it takes me back to good times in C'ville and UVA.

Became a fan:I'm W&L class of '89, so I've seen SGG, SGL, SGGL, And Tom solo anywhere from Hollins, Sweet Briar, RMWC, Spanky's in Lynchburg, the Bayou, Mineshaft, Birchmere, among other places. Girl in Red is my favorite song, because all the girls always screamed the "she loves theatre, she loves ART" at me during the song. Mention the term "track #8" to my or my friend Pete Parker's girlfriend, and you'll get a sour response. That comes from the time we sang Far Away about 30 times in a row in the car on the way from Lynchburg to the Birchmere a couple of years ago. Seeing them live just gives me such a great feeling, bringing back so many great memories of my years in Virginia, now that I have to live in NJ. (yuck)I loved the regae version of Far Away, they played this past weekend at the Birchmere (8/17/96)

Comments:The band should put the music that they play on their home-site. Chords, they already have lyrics, tabs, riffs, ect...

Became a fan:Marya Howell is the main reason-(see her entry in the guest book) She and I started going to the Birchmere to see them and have hardly missed a set of shows there since. Mike L and Tom- we are two of the three folks that were dancing in the front row last December to City Girl. I was also there for the Sat show earlier this month but my dancing partner wasn't and I figured I would sit back and relax at the show for a change. Goggin- sorry about the problems with the lyrics at that show. \ You handled it well! As always, you guys put on a great show. Mike L-keep working on that solo album. Hope the live version of 6'6" makes the cut. See you in May and July.

Became a fan:Well it started for me in Back Room Pav at good ole UVA. It was my first year (so long ago back in 1982) my roommates and I would go and listen to Tom and Rusty. We would also go and listen to Mike (he was solo then). Then in 1983 they became SGG. I was there the very first time (it was suppose to be in Back Room Pav, but so many people showed up, they had to move to the front room). I have followed them ever since. I remeber many nights at the Mine Shaft. I was there for the "farewell" of SGG and the beginning of SGL, and for the "farewell" of SGGL. I am so glad that they are still playing. I now live in Northern VA and try and see them every time they are at the Birchmere. Wonder how much money I have spent on these guys in the last 13!! years: going to shows, buying T-Shirts, buying bumper stickers and buttons, buying records (yes, they first released on vinal), tapes and CDs.

Comments:So many memories... Favorite All Time SGG song: Their version of "American Pie". Also Tom's version of "If I Only Had a Heart" from the Wizard of OZ and "House at Pooh Corner".
